Q: Where do you get your ideas?

A: I’ve been an avid reader and movie watcher my whole life. Every time I finish a great story I get so inspired to create my own worlds and adventures. You never know when a good idea will strike, so I always have a little notepad with me for jotting down thoughts. Then at home I log the notes in my computer and expand on the ideas with my cats, Attila and Raider. As you can see, my animal friends are just as important in real life as they are in my books!

Q: What is your advice for people who want to write their own books?

A: Some people think that authors sit down and write awesome books on their first try, but the truth is you need practice and hard work to become a good writer. For starters, there’s nothing like reading a good book to get your imagination going. Once you know what kind of story you want to write, don’t be afraid to start! The important thing is to keep at it and not give up. Once I get to know the characters, they come alive and start talking so I just jot down what they have to say and lead them in the story. But editing your work is a craft, the more you do it the better you get at figuring out what to say and what not to say. The trick to good writing is balancing the amount of description with good crisp dialogue and fun, smart storytelling. I always do a chapter outline first so I know where the story is going and I don’t get lost. Of course, I love surprises so anything can happen once the action starts.

Q: What were you thinking when your first book, Circles in the Stream, was published?

A: I’ve always wanted to be a writer, so it was really exciting. I think I screamed. I still get excited when I see my books in a bookstore – it makes me want to write more!

Q: Which of the mages is most like you: Emily, Kara, or Adriane?

A: I’d have to say that each of the mages has a different part of my personality. I play the flute like Emily does, and I used to take care of my neighbors’ animals when they were on vacation, kind of like the Pet Palace. Adriane shares my love of hiking and nature. I’m also learning how to play the guitar, but at this point Adriane’s a better guitarist than I am! As for Kara, she shares my love of sparkly nail polish, a really good trip to the mall and flying cats.

Q: What’s the best part about being an author?

A: Definitely the fans. I love to hear from them and it’s so much fun to meet fans at book signings. The readers of Avalon are smart, creative and wonderfully imaginative. The whole reason I write is for them. After all, once a book is finished, it doesn’t belong to me anymore. It’s for the readers, and I take my job very seriously. My biggest hope is that something I’ve written will inspire someone else to be creative in their own way.

Q: Can you give us a few hints about what’s next in the Avalon series?

A: There are going to be some major surprises. Emily, Kara and Adriane are really starting to change and find out who they are. Their magic is constantly evolving, so none of the mages knows what she’s really capable of yet. Adriane and Kara’s relationship will change, especially since both have very strong magic and wills to match. The conclusion of the story in Book 12, Full Circle, will have a surprise ending I don’t think anyone will be expecting. So hang onto your jewels, because everyone is going to come out of this story a very different person. I think fans will be very excited about what’s in store for the mages!

Q: What’s up with the Avalon movie?

A: I can’t tell you how many wonderful letters and e-mails I get from fans anxiously waiting for the film. These things take a long time to do right and with a little luck we’ll have some announcements shortly.
